Peaches to Play at Duncan Park Stadium’s 100th Anniversary Celebration

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburg County Peaches and Greenwood Flying Monkeys will take part in a special Blue Ridge League game this Saturday, July 11, as part of Duncan Park Stadium’s 100th anniversary celebration.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at historic Duncan Park Stadium. Admission to the game will be free to the public as part of the day’s festivities.

The game will be one of the featured events in a full day celebrating one of South Carolina’s most historic baseball venues. Duncan Park Stadium hosted its first game on July 8, 1926, when the Spartanburg Spartans defeated the Macon Peaches, 5-1. Over the past century, the ballpark has hosted the American Legion World Series, exhibition games featuring Major League stars including Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees, minor league teams including the Spartanburg Peaches and Spartanburg Phillies, the Negro League’s Spartanburg Sluggers, and college baseball programs including Wofford College and USC Upstate.

Saturday’s celebration begins at 9 a.m. and includes a free Nike RBI Playball clinic for children ages 4-12, a commemorative program, and the Blue Ridge League college wood-bat game.

“This is a huge day for the Blue Ridge League, the Peaches, the Flying Monkeys and baseball fans in the Spartanburg area,” said Greg Sullivan, chairman of the Blue Ridge League. “Duncan Park is one of the great historic ballparks in the Southeast, and we’re proud for two of our South Carolina teams to be part of a celebration that honors 100 years of baseball history. The Peaches play most of their home games at Inman Mills Ballpark, but this is a special opportunity to represent Spartanburg County on a very meaningful day for the entire baseball community.”

The local American Legion post will sell concessions during the game. Both the Peaches and Flying Monkeys will also sell team merchandise at the stadium, including the first public sale of each club’s special fitted caps.

The matchup brings together two first-year Blue Ridge League clubs that have helped expand the league’s presence in South Carolina this summer. The Flying Monkeys have brought summer collegiate baseball back to historic Legion Field in Greenwood.
